Common Types of Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis
(Most common)

Most common type of eczema.

  • Who gets it: Often starts in childhood but can affect adults too.

  • Symptoms: Dry, itchy, red skin — especially behind knees, elbows, and face.

  • Cause: Linked to allergies, asthma, and family history.

Contact Dermatitis
(From irritants or allergens)

Caused by touching something that irritates the skin or triggers an allergic reaction.

  • Two types:

    • Irritant Contact Dermatitis: Reaction to soaps, detergents, or chemicals.

    • Allergic Contact Dermatitis: Reaction to things like nickel, fragrance, or poison ivy.

  • Symptoms: Red, itchy, sometimes blistered or burning skin — only where contact happened.

Dyshidrotic Eczema
(Hand eczema)

Affects the hands and feet.

  • Symptoms: Small, itchy blisters on fingers, palms, or soles.

  • Triggers: Stress, sweat, allergies, or metals (like nickel).

Nummular Eczema
(Round patches)

Round, coin-shaped patches.

  • Symptoms: Dry, itchy, scaly or wet patches that look like coins.

  • Common areas: Legs, arms, and torso.

  • Triggers: Dry skin, injuries, or irritants.

Seborrheic Dermatitis
(Dandruff)

Occurs in oily areas like the scalp and face.

  • Symptoms: Greasy, yellowish scales with redness.

  • Where: Scalp (can look like dandruff), around nose, eyebrows, ears.

  • Common in: Adults and infants (called cradle cap in babies).

Stasis Dermatitis
(Venous eczema)

Caused by poor circulation, usually in the legs.

  • Symptoms: Swelling, redness, itching, and sometimes open sores.

  • Who gets it: Older adults with varicose veins or vein problems.

Lichen Simplex Chronicus
(Too much scratching)

Caused by repeated scratching or rubbing.

  • Symptoms: Thick, leathery, very itchy patches.

  • Common areas: Neck, wrists, ankles, scalp, or genitals.

Asteatotic Eczema
(Dry skin)

Eczema from very dry skin, mostly older adults during winter.

  • Symptoms: Dry, cracked, itchy skin (looks like cracked earth)

  • Common Areas: Lower legs, arms, sides of the body

  • Triggers: Cold weather, hot showers, dry air, harsh soaps
